                    January 13th-17th, 2014
The next three weeks the students will complete a unit titled: We Have a Dream. In this unit they will read fiction and poetry that demonstrate the use of figurative language. They will read poems that focus on a topic and observe how topics are designed line by line and stanza by stanza. The students will illustrate figurative language to express their own interpretation of their meaning and then write about how the literal meaning is different from the figurative meaning. They will focus on the contribution of Martin Luther King, Jr., by reading several books about his life. Finally, the students will research other prominent Americans, write a persuasive letter to discuss the important contributions from that person's life and then for the speaking portion become their character by creating a wax museum and acting out their part. Our content focus will be on the Social Studies Standards: Knowledge of the contribution of non-Missourians; Describe the contributions of Martin Luther King, Jr.; Knowledge of democratic principles of governance, especially as applied to school, community and state; Analyze peaceful resolution of disputes by courts or other legitimate authorities, such as parents, teachers, principals, etc.
