I am currently in a Castlio book club studying the Leader in Me book written by Stephen Covey. The premise of the book is developing leaders by incorporating The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Over spring break a group of staff members (myself included) had the opportunity to visit a school and witness in person how elementary students were incorporating the 7 habits into their daily life. It was an extremely inspiring visit, one that made me want to make immediate changes in my classroom.
Therefore, I am going to spend time each week discussing with the kids an effective habit. This week our focus is Habit #1: Be Proactive. The motto is "I'm in charge of Me." The statements the students will learn this week are "I" statements such as: I take initiative. I am a responsible person. I do the right thing without being asked, even when no one is looking. I choose my actions, attitudes and moods. I do not blame others for my wrong actions. I will be kicking off the habit with the following video: Habit 1-Be Proactive . We will also spend time reading the book The 7 Habits of Happy Kids. I hope to hear any stories from home about the kids incorporating the habits in their everyday life. I also plan on learning some happy habits myself.
