The next three weeks the students will explore narrative text. They will conduct an extensive author studying using the works of Patricia Polacco. The students will write a narrative piece that is taken through the writing process. Their narrative must include dialogue, multiple paragraphs, a developing lead and taken through to the publishing stage. They will also explore a variety of texts written by Patricia Polacco to learn how stories are organized, investigate the use of dialogue, and describe how characters respond in a story. They will compare and contrast the various aspects of the stories. In their reading group they will complete the constructed response questions online for the text Stone Fox. We are moving from a paper reading response journal to a paperless, which is quite exciting for most of the students.

Students brought home information regarding their Flat Me's on Friday. The goal is to mail them to a friend or family member in another town, state or country and receive a letter regarding the adventure their Flat Me experienced on their visit. The pictures and letters the students receive will be used to create an interactive map we will post on our project page. This project kicks off our unit on the World Around Us; researching maps, our location in the world, changes that have taken place over time and ending with Native Americans. It will last until the end of the quarter.
